It is with profound condolences that the Clark-Williams Funeral Home family announce the passing of Ora Harris McGhee on Friday, September 20, 2024. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
Ora Lee Harris McGhee was born March 15, 1940, in Charleston to the late Ollie and Betty (Ward) Booker. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Delores and Elizabeth, and six brothers, Sam, El, James, Robert, John, and Jimmy. Surrounded by her children, she peacefully passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 28, at noon at Bethlehem M.B. Church, 43 Carroll Drive in Charleston, followed by interment in the church cemetery. Clarke-Williams Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Ora Lee’s life was filled with grace, always uplifting others. In her final days, she reassured loved ones, reminding them not to be sad, as she was at peace and ready to embrace her eternal home in Heaven.
Her faith was reflected in Proverbs 3:5: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding." Known as "Mother McGhee," Ora Lee’s warm smile and welcoming spirit touched everyone she met. She cherished gardening and preparing Sunday meals for family and friends. She worked as a dedicated seamstress before retiring.
A devoted member of Bethlehem M.B. Church, Ora Lee served as church secretary and choir member. Her sweet soprano voice, often singing "Amazing Grace" and "I Need Thee," inspired many during worship.
Ora Lee married Charlie Harris in 1958, and he preceded her in death She raised eight children: Rose, Gwendolyn, Clinton, Clifton, Christopher, Sherry, Marvin, and Kevin.
In 2007, she found love again and married Pastor Leonard McGhee of Bethlehem M.B. Church, who has also passed. Together, they faithfully led their congregation, even overseeing the construction of a new sanctuary.
In addition to her children, she leaves behind her brother, Willie Booker of Chicago; daughters-in-law, Betty (Clinton) and Carolyn (Clifton); son-in-law, Michael Phillips (Sherry); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Her grandchildren, a true source of joy in her life, number thirteen in total, with twenty-six great-grandchildren continuing her legacy.
As 2 Timothy 4:7 reminds us, Ora Lee "fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith." Though deeply missed, her love, faith, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her well.
